Morphology
Size
60-91 µm long, 15-19 µm wide (UK population).
Shape
Valves with strongly convex dorsal margin, slightly concave ventral margin, except for a slightly tumid central section. Valve ends broadly rounded.
Symmetry
Dorsiventral, isopolar.
Striae
Striae slightly radiate on dorsal side, more or less parallel in central part of valve on ventral side, becoming radiate near valve ends, 8-10 in 10 µm (UK population).
Axial area
Narrow, linear, slightly curved.
Central area
Rounded central area, occupying ca. 1/3 of valve width.
Raphe
Raphe lateral, proximal raphe curved towards ventral margin, then towards dorsal margin; proximal raphe ends expanded, bent ventrally, dorsally deflected terminal fissures.
SEM morphology
Striae uniseriate with transapically elongate, slit-like areolae.
