Morphology
Size
12.5-15.5 µm long, 4.8-5.8 µm wide (UK population); 7.5-28 µm long, 5-9 µm wide (Morales & Manoylov 2006).
Shape
Valves ovate with broadly rounded head pole and slightly narrower foot pole, frustule rectangular in girdle view.
Symmetry
Slightly heteropolar.
Striae
Striae mostly parallel, slightly radiate near head and foot pole; 8-9 in 10 µm (UK population), 5-10 in 10 µm (Morales & Manoylov 2006).
Axial area
Sternum narrow, linear.
SEM morphology
A large apical pore field present at the foot pole, located mainly on the mantle; a small apical pore field and a depressed area on the valve face can be present at the head pole. Spines absent.
