Morphology
Size
8.0-21.5 µm long, 4.0-7.0 µm wide (UK population); 13-55 µm long, 5.5-9 µm wide (Morales & Manoylov 2006).
Shape
Valves rhombic with broadly rounded apices.
Symmetry
Large valves more or less isopolar, smaller valves slightly heteropolar.
Striae
Parallel in central part of the valve, radiate towards the apices, 9-10 in 10 µm (UK population), 6.5-9 in 10 µm, (Morales & Manoylov 2006); areolae not discernible in LM.
Axial area
Sternum moderately wide and rhombic in larger valves, narrow rhombic or linear in smaller valves.
SEM morphology
Two pore fields of different size located at the apices. Small spines present at valve face/mantle junction, 1-2 located between the areolae; smaller granules present at and near the valve margin between the areolae and on the vimines.
