Morphology
Size
20.5-40.5 µm long, 10-13.5 µm wide (UK population), 19-53.5 µm long, 9.3-14.0 µm wide (Reichardt 2001).
Shape
Valves clavate with broadly rounded head pole, the latter almost as wide as the maximum valve width. Valve centre slightly tumid; valve margins tapering gradually towards much narrower, rounded foot pole.
Symmetry
Heteropolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
Striae radiate, becoming strongly radiate towards foot pole, 11-14 in 10 µm (UK population), 10-16 in 10 µm (Reichardt 2001).
Axial area
Axial area moderately wide, linear.
Central area
Central area irregular, on each side bordered by 2-3 shortened striae of different length.
Raphe
Raphe lateral, undulate with expanded, drop-shaped proximal ends, slightly deflected towards the primary side of the valve.
Other features
One isolated pore opposite long central stria.
SEM morphology
External areola openings C-shaped, occluded by lateral flaps.
Apical pore field at foot pole bisected by raphe.
