Morphology

Size
Length 9.5-73.5 µm, width (central part) 4.2-5.7 µm (UK populations); 10-43 µm, 5.5-7.5 µm (Heudre et al. 2021).

Shape
Valves linear, the inflated central part of the valve and the spatulate valve ends of similar width; frustules in girdle view rectangular.

Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.

Striae
Parallel to radiate throughout the valve, sometimes irregularly spaced.

Axial area
Narrow axial area.

Central area
Small, irregular central area, sometimes indistinct.


SEM morphology
Uniseriate striae with round external areola openings.

Large pore fields at both poles.

One rimoportula in central part of valve.

Small spines can be present along valve margin.

Cingulum composed of closed copulae.
