Morphology
Size
30-300 µm long, 10-45 µm wide (at broadest point, Lange-Bertalot et al. 2017); 51-114 µm long, 17-21 µm wide at constriction, 20-27 µm wide at broadest point (UK population).
Shape
Valves panduriform, constricted in valve centre, with cuneate ends.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
Striae very fine with slit-like areola openings; costae parallel or slightly convergent, becoming radiate towards valve ends.
Axial area
Narrow axial area.
Raphe
Raphe system running around valve perimeter, slightly raised above valve face; fibulae 8-9 in 10 µm (UK population).
Other features
Valve face with 4-6 prominent undulations.
SEM morphology
Valve face with reticulate thickenings, many granules located on thickenings and their intersections.
