Morphology

Size
29-41 µm long, 6.5-8.5 µm wide (UK population).

Shape
Valves with convex dorsal margin, ventral margin more or less straight; valve ends protracted, subrostrate to rostrate, broadly rounded.

Symmetry
Dorsiventral, isopolar.

Striae
Striae parallel to slightly radiate, becoming radiate towards valve ends, 9-10 in 10 µm; areolae clearly visible.

Axial area
Narrow, linear, slightly curved.

Central area
Not differentiated or very slightly widened.

Raphe
Raphe more or less in centre of valve, raphe curved towards ventral margin in valve centre; proximal ends slightly enlarged, bent dorsally, dorsally deflected terminal fissures.


SEM morphology
Striae uniseriate, rarely biseriate adjacent to axial area, composed of transapically orientated slit-like areolae. One stigma adjacent to central ventral stria.
