Size
13.5-44 µm long, 5-9 µm wide at valve centre, 7.5-9 µm wide at broadest point (UK population).
Shape
Valves linear with with protracted, rostrate, in smaller valves subrostrate, rounded ends. Valve margin symmetrically or asymmetrically constricted at valve centre; in largest valves, margin of distal parts of valve slightly undulate.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical or asymmetrical.
Striae
Striae parallel or slightly radiate in central part of valve, radiate and slightly curved towards valve ends, 17-18 in 10 µm (UK population).
Axial area
Narrow, linear.
