Morphology
Size
4.8-10 µm long, 3.6-6.3 µm wide (UK population); 6.5-13 µm long, 4-8.3 µm wide (Krammer 1990).
Shape
Valves elliptic with broadly rounded or obtusely pointed ends.
Symmetry
Valves isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
On raphe valve striae slightly radiate to radiate, interrupted towards valve margin by narrow hyaline area, areolae not discernable, 28-36 in 10 µm. On rapheless valve striae slightly radiate to radiate, slightly curved towards valve ends, comprising round areolae, 18-25 in 10 µm (Krammer 1990).
Axial area
Narrow, linear on both valves.
Central area
On raphe valve indistinct, or hardly widened, small round; on rapheless valve indistinct.
Raphe
Straight with small, rounded central pores positioned close to each other, and tear drop-shaped distal ends (SEM).
