To size: To 47 mm. Shell Structure: Thin robust shell with fragile margins. Equivalve: Inequivalve. Equilateral: Inequilateral, right valve fits into lower left valve. Tumidity: Not tumid. Outline: Irregular oval.

Sculpture: Irregular crenulations, flaky periostracum. Margin: Irregularly crenulate. Ligament: Alivincular, triangular. Hinge: Chomata over entire margins. Pallial Musculature: Monomyarian, posterior adductor mussel ovate. Colour: White to cream with purple blotches internally and externally.

Distribution & Ecology

In native range from Florida to Louisiana, Bermuda, Mexico and Honduras. Cemented to rocks and boat bottoms in shallow waters


In Britain and Ireland it has been found attached to plastic flotsam in St Austell and a Stone crab trap near Marazion, Cornwall.
