Mactroidea : Mactridae

Non-native
Tebble name:
Smith & Heppell name:

To size: To 20mm. Shell Structure: Solid, thickened towards umbo, fragile at ventral margins. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Almost equilateral, beaks slightly anterior. Tumidity: Moderately tumid. Outline: Triangular, broadly rounded ventral margin, anterior margin acutely rounded, posterior margin angular, appearing a little truncated.

Sculpture: Fine concentric lines, posterior radial ridge more roughly wrinkled. Margin: Smooth. Ligament: Internal on triangular condrophore. Hinge: Singular laterals in left valve, paired laterals in right valve. 2 cardinals in each valve; in left valve they are conjoined and form an upside down v-shape; in right valve they are almost joined, one parallel to the hinge line, the other points down towards the ventral margin forming a right angle. The cardinals fill the height of the hinge plate. Pallial Musculature: Posterior adductor is slightly larger than anterior, shallow pallial sinus, does not reach mid-line.
