Papillicardium papillosum (Poli, 1791)

Smith & Heppell name: Plagiocardium papillosum (Poli, 1791)

To size: To 15mm. Shell Structure: Thin shelled but robust, opaque. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Inequilateral, beaks only just in front of the midline. Tumidity: Plump. Outline: Subcircular a little quadrate; anterior and posterior dorsal margins of approximate equal length sloping; Posterior margin gently curved; ventral and anterior margins a broad even curve.

Sculpture: 24-27 radial riblets, interspaces narrower than riblets; Interspaces with prominent notches. Anterior riblets with broad blunt cross bars; median and posterior riblets with erect rounded nodules (papillae). Margin: Crenulated by interlocking ribs and interspaces. Furrows extending into the umbonal cavity. Ligament: Prominent, on short nymph. Hinge: Moderately developed, RV with 2 anterior laterals, 1 posterior lateral, 2 cardinals. LV with single anterior and posterior laterals and 2 cardinals. Pallial Musculature: Obscure. Periostracum: Thin. Colour: Dirty white some with pink/brown blotches; internal white or with pink radial bands.

Distribution & Ecology

A southern species reaching the Channel Islands with valves only from off Devon and Cornwall.
