Cardioidea : Cardiidae

Tebble name: Parvicardium scabrum (Philippi)
Smith & Heppell name: Parvicardium scabrum (Philippi, 1844)

To size: To 15mm. Shell Structure: Thin shelled but robust, opaque. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Inequilateral, beaks only just in front of the midline. Tumidity: Plump. Outline: Broadly oval, transverse in small shells; anterior and posterior dorsal margins of approximate equal length, sloping; Posterior margin weakly truncated; ventral and anterior margins a broad even curve. Contour: Posterior angle present but posterior area not strongly sloping or defined. Lunule small and narrow.

Sculpture: 26-28 radial riblets, interspaces narrower than riblets; Interspaces mostly without concentric slits but are present in some small shells. Anterior and median ribs with numerous rounded cross bars, posterior with cross bars developing as cusp like spines. Juveniles: Distinctly inequilateral, umbonal keel weak, beak small projecting (Prod xx). Posterior riblets bearing prominent broad spiny scales, other riblets initially smooth but soon bearing erect broad scales on all ribs, these becoming more robust to give adult sculpture. Margin: Crenulated by interlocking ribs and interspaces. Furrows extending just beyond margins but further in small shells. Ligament: Prominent, on short nymph. Hinge: Weak, RV with 2 anterior laterals, 1 posterior lateral, 2 cardinals. LV with single anterior and posterior laterals and 2 cardinals. Pallial Musculature: Obscure. Periostracum: Thin.
