Morphology
5-20 µm long (UK populations), 8.8-17.4 µm (type population);
3-4 µm wide (UK populations), 2.2-4.1 (type population).
Shape
Valve linear-elliptic to linear lanceolate with rostrate to subcapitate poles, frustules rectangular and arched in girdle view, ends not reflexed.
Symmetry
Valves isopolar.
Valve
Frustules heterovalvate, raphe valve concave, rapheless valve convex.
Striae
Striae on both valves just visible and radiate, wider spaced in the valve centre, density 28-32 in 10 µm (UK populations).
Axial area
Raphe valve with narrow linear axial area, rapheless valve with narrow linear axial area slightly widening towards the centre.
Central area
Raphe valve with variable central area, from almost absent, slightly rounded, to rarely a rectangular fascia.
Rapheless valve with almost absent or slightly elliptical central area.
Raphe
A straight filiform raphe present on one valve, externally with slightly expanded straight proximal pores; distal raphe fissure straight or very lightly deflected.
