Morphology
Size
15-17 µm long, 3.5-4.0 µm wide (UK population), 10-25 µm long, 3.5-4.5 µm wide (Krammer 1997).
Shape
Valves lanceolate, convex dorsal and ventral margins taper gradually towards the small subcapitate to capitate poles.
Symmetry
Isopolar, symmetrical or very slightly dorsiventral.
Striae
Parallel or slightly radiate, 25-27 in 10 µm (UK population), 24-25 in 10 µm (Krammer 1997).
Axial area
Narrow, linear.
Central area
Small, indistinct.
Raphe
Filiform, positioned in the centre of the valve.
SEM morphology
Proximal raphe fissures slightly dorsally curved, distal raphe fissures slightly ventrally deflected.
