Morphology
Size
Length 9-40 µm; width 3.5-9 µm (central European populations, Hofmann et al. 2011).
Shape
Valves slightly cymbelloid, dorsal margin slightly convex, ventral margin almost straight or slightly convex with inflated central part; slightly protracted rostrate poles; frustules in girdle view more or less rectangular or slightly trapeziform.
Symmetry
Dorsiventral.
Striae
Almost parallel to slightly radiate, biseriate with round areolae (in SEM).
Axial area
Narrow, linear.
Central area
Asymmetrical fascia extending to the ventral margin, wider on the ventral side, bordered by a short stria dorsally; one isolated 'stigma' near the proximal raphe endings.
Raphe
Simple, straight with expanded straight proximal endings, terminal fissures bent ventrally.
Other features
Apical pore fields present, largely on the ventral side of the pole (SEM); circular depressions on the external valve surface (SEM).
