Morphology
Shape
Valves lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate with capitate ends.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
Radiate, uniseriate, transapically elongated areolae are visible in LM.
Axial area
Narrow, linear.
Central area
Small, circular or rhombic, rarely hardly distinct from the axial area.
Raphe
Straight, filiform, proximal endings appear expanded in LM; one ridge on either side of the raphe (SEM). A horizontal groove at the poles can create an impression that the distal raphe ends are T-shaped, but they are straight and very slightly expanded.
SEM morphology
Small protrusions on the virgae.
