Morphology

Size
Length 7.0-14.0 µm, width 2.5-3.5 µm (UK population), length 6-20 µm, width 3-4 µm (Levkov 2009).

Shape
Broadly elliptic frustules, composed of two semi-elliptic valves.

Symmetry
Dorsiventral, isopolar, biconvex in girdle view.

Striae
On dorsal side parallel, rarely slightly radiate in valve centre, becoming more strongly radiate towards apices; on ventral side radiate in valve centre, becoming convergent towards apices, 16-18 in 10 µm (Levkov 2009).

Axial area
Narrow, straight or very slightly arched, slightly closer to ventral than dorsal margin.

Central area
Broad fascia extending to valve margin on dorsal and ventral side.

Raphe
Straight or slightly curved, proximal raphe ends more or less straight, distal raphe ends deflected dorsally.

SEM morphology
Dorsally a marginal ridge and hyaline area at junction between valve face and mantle. Dorsal and ventral striae comprised of single areolae.
