Morphology

Size
34-110 µm long, 12-19 µm wide (Krammer 2002).

Shape
Valves with convex dorsal margin, ventral margin slightly convex in centre of valve, broadly rounded ends, not or very slightly protracted.

Symmetry
Dorsiventral, isopolar.

Striae
Striae slightly radiate, more strongly radiate near valve ends, 9-10 in 10 µm in valve centre, 12 in 10 µm towards valve ends, areolae visible in LM, 22-24 in 10 µm (UK population).

Axial area
Narrow linear, approximately in centre of valve.

Central area
Round, approximately 1/3 of valve width.

Raphe
Raphe lateral, becoming slightly reverse lateral towards proximal ends, filiform towards distal ends; proximal ends expanded, drop-shaped; dorsally deflected terminal raphe fissures.
