Morphology
Size
Length 19-57 µm, width 8.1-9.3 µm (UK populations, Mann et al. 2004).
Shape
Valves narrowly elliptical with boadly rostrate ends.
Striae
Radiate throughout, becoming almost parallel near the poles; 18-22 in 10 µm (UK populations, Mann et al. 2004).
Axial area
Narrow linear, straight.
Central area
Bow-tie-shaped subfascia; somewhat irregular outline due to alternate long and short striae bordering the central area.
Raphe
Simple filiform, clearly undulate; external proximal raphe endings expanded and strongly deflected towards the primary side, internal endings also deflected towards the primary side, terminal fissures bent towards the secondary side; raphe-sternum elevated for almost the whole of its length (SEM).
Other features
Polar bars angled out towards the poles.
