Morphology
Size
Length 19-44 µm, width 7.2-8.2 µm (UK populations, Mann et al. 2004).
Shape
Valves narrowly elliptical with rostrate to subcapitate poles.
Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.
Striae
Mostly radiate, becoming parallel near the poles, 16-22 in 10 µm (UK populations, Mann et al. 2004).
Axial area
Narrow linear, straight.
Central area
Bow-tie-shaped subfascia; somewhat irregular outline due to alternate long and short striae bordering the central area.
Raphe
Simple, straight or very slightly undulate; proximal raphe endings, deflected towards the primary side, the internal endings also deflected towards the primary side, the terminal fissures abruptly bent towards the secondary side (SEM).
Other features
Polar bars appear wider than in S. blackfordensis and are perpendicular to the raphe.
