Morphology

Size
Length 18-38 µm, width 6.2-7.3 µm (UK populations, Evans & Mann 2009).

Shape
Valves linear-elliptical with broad subcapitate poles, becoming rostrate in smaller specimens.

Striae
Striae radiate, slightly curved, 23–25(26) in 10 µm.

Axial area
Narrow linear, straight.

Central area
Transversely rectangular to bow-tie-shaped subfascia; short striae bordering the central area somewhat irregular.

Raphe
Simple, straight; proximal raphe endings straight or slightly deflected towards the primary side.

Other features
Polar bars parallel to slightly angled towards the poles.
