To size: To 50mm. Shell Structure: Thin but not fragile. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Slightly inequilateral, beaks just infront of midline. Tumidity: Inflated. Outline: Broadly oval remaining longer than high, anterior dorsal margin rather pronounced, posterior margin only slightly less rounded than anterior. Contour: Umbonate, posterior angle weak.

Sculpture: 16-18 widely spaced, strong radial ribs, each carrying a row of short spines arising from the midline of the rib. In early stages, the triangular shaped spines are joined to each other giving a serrated profile but soon the spines are separated. The spines are spathulate with their upper surfaces excavated. Overall with a strong concentric rugose sculpture most prominent in interspaces. Margin: Deeply crenulated, interlocking ends of ribs and interspaces. Ligament: External, a prominent raised band set on a prominent nymph. Hinge: RV with 2 cardinals the posterior slightly the larger; 2 anterior and 1 posterior laterals: LV with 2 cardinals and single anterior and posterior laterals. Pallial Musculature: Pallial line entire. Periostracum: Thin. Colour: White to tan.

Distribution & Ecology

A southern species now recorded from the Netherlands and therefore likely to appear on the English Channel coasts. Muddy sand, intertidal and shallow shelf. In the Netherlands is found in the lower reaches of the delta system of the Schelde.
