Nuculoidea : Nuculidae

Tebble name: n/a
Smith & Heppell name: Nuculoma delphinodonta Mighels & Adams, 1842

Shell Structure: Relatively solid. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Very inequilateral, the beaks lie approximately 10% of dorsal margin length from posterior. Tumidity: Highly tumid. Outline: Irregularly rhomboidal, rounded: antero-dorsal margin initially straight in front of the beaks, then sloping more steeply; postero-dorsal margin almost straight and sloping very steeply, posterior margin slightly truncated, ventral margin gently rounded; escutcheon short, relatively broad, heart-shaped, slightly projecting, with poorly defined edges; lunule raised, long, broadly elliptical with poorly defined edges; umbos large, swollen, strongly opisthogyrous with the ends approximately 5% of dorsal margin length from posterior. Contour: Swollen umbonate.

Sculpture: Very fine, irregularly spaced, raised concentric lines and coarser growth stops. Margin: Smooth. Ligament: Internal, opisthodetic, with a rounded triangular ligament seated in a well-developed resilifer. A thin, barely visible, external ligament lies anterior to the beaks. Hinge: Taxodont: Solid, continuous hinge plate, very narrow below the beaks, broadening rapidly towards the anterior, but of equal width posteriorly. Teeth, moderately long and sharply pointed, usually 4-5 posterior and 10-11 anterior of the resilifer. Periostracum: Silky, grey green to olive; sometimes with deposits of hardened ferruginous mud. Colour: White to bluey grey, slightly nacreous. Inside of shell nacreous.
