Notes on Nomenclature

Not included in CLEMAM. In WoRMS as Ostrea chilensis. Beu (2006) use isotopes and claim that Tiostrea is synonymous with Ostrea. However Chanley & Dinamani (1980) created Tiostrea because the larvae are very different to Ostrea, almost Gryphaeidae-like.

To size: To 80mm. Shell Structure: Solid but not heavy. Equivalve: Inequivalve, cemented valve cupped, upper valve flat or weakly convex. Equilateral: Inequilateral. Outline: Suboval to subcircular, margins of lower valve irregularly fluted, upper valve less so.

Sculpture: Upper valve foliaceous with underlying radial ribs; lower valve with radiating ribs in a disrupted pattern. Margin: Chomata mostly absent, some with a few ostreiine chomata close to the ligament. Ligament: Amphidetic, internal on a triangular resilifer. Pallial Musculature: Adductor scar kidney shaped, colour as underlying shell. Colour: Upper valve tan becoming black with paler radiating rays; lower valve paler overall. Internally creamy to yellowish with a darker marginal band.

Distribution & Ecology

Introduced from New Zealand into the Menai Straits, North Wales where it is established and breeding. Direct larval development has resulted in limited spread and remains restricted to a small area on the Anglesey side. Intertidal.

The shape is most similar to O. edulis but the black colour is distinctive.
