Notes on Nomenclature

Here previously as Pseudoneilonella latior.

To size: To 7mm. Shell Structure: Larger specimens relatively solid but smaller individuals moderately thin and fragile. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Slightly inequilateral, beaks just in front of midline, approximately 40-45% of total length from anterior end. Becomes more inequilateral with growth. Tumidity: Relatively tumid. Outline: Oval to rounded triangular: height of shell approximately 75% of length; antero-dorsal and postero-dorsal margins almost straight, moderately sloping; anterior and posterior margins narrowly rounded to very slightly pointed; ventral margin deeply rounded. Umbo relatively prominent, relatively narrow, rounded, projecting well above the dorsal margin, anterior of midline.

Sculpture: Prominent, but irregularly spaced, raised concentric lines. Margin: Smooth. Ligament: External ligament opisthodetic, visible either side of the beak but very short anteriorly. Tiny internal amphidetic ligament seated below the beak in a minute triangular formed resilifer. Hinge: Taxodont: Hinge plate relatively broad, continuous with long chevron shaped teeth, 18-19 posterior, and 13-14 anterior, which are drawn up into points, on either side of the ligament. Periostracum: Glossy, straw coloured. Colour: Translucent white. Additional Characters: The hind-gut forms a simple, rounded loop on the right side of the body.

Distribution & Ecology

Widely distributed in the Atlantic deep-sea basins, on the continental slopes and in the Mediterranean. Depth range 500m to >4000m.
