Gari depressa (Pennant, 1777)

To size: To 65mm. Shell Structure: Solid. Equivalve: Slightly inequivalve, RV more convex than LV. Equilateral: Inequilateral, beaks in front of midline. Tumidity: Not tumid. Outline: Narrowly ovate/elongate, posterior margin angular, almost truncate. Contour: Posterior gape.

Sculpture: Concentric lines and ridges, fine radial lines. Margin: Smooth. Ligament: Large, prominent dark band extending around a fifth of way to posterior margin. Hinge: 2 cardinals in each valve; in LV anterior large, prominent, bifid, posterior tiny, thin; in RV anterior larger than posterior, although both are prominent and bifid. No laterals. Pallial Musculature: Deep pallial sinus, to beneath umbones, confluent with pallial line for half the length of sinus. Cruciform muscle barely visible. Periostracum: Thick, dark brown/greenish-brown. Colour: White/cream with pink/purple rays of varying widths.

Distribution & Ecology

A burrower in silty sand to shell gravel in relatively sheltered settings. Although widely recorded across the whole shelf it is mostly found in the sublittoral and rarely beyond 30m. Mostly from the south and west coasts.

Key Features & Similar Species

Most similar to G. tellinella but in that species the posterior dorsal margin is sloping, the posterior is less expanded and there is no posterior gape.
