Size
30-34 µm long, 7-7.5 µm wide (UK population), 26-40 µm long, 5-8 µm wide (Lange-Bertalot 2001).

Shape
Valves lanceolate with protracted rostrate ends.

Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.

Striae
Radiate, near apices convergent, 14-15 in 10 µm (UK population). Areolae clearly discernible in LM, 30-32 in 10 µm.

Axial area
Very narrow, linear.

Central area
Rounded, occupying approximately half of the valve width.

Raphe
Straight, filiform with small, teardrop-shaped proximal raphe ends deflected towards primary side of valve, terminal raphe fissures deflected towards secondary side.


SEM morphology
Internally, raphe opens obliquely to the secondary side, accessory rib unilaterally expanded at valve centre.
