To size: To 5mm. Shell Structure: Thin. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Inequilateral, beaks in front of midline. Tumidity: A liitle inflated. Outline: Obliquely oval, expanded posteriorly; posterior dorsal margin straight angled to long almost straight posterior; anterior rounded narrower than posterior ventral curvature. Contour: Posterior angle rounded but distinct.

Sculpture: 22-27 radial ribs those on the anterior and posterior fading towards dorsal margins; ribs low rather flat and equal in width with interspaces. Occasionally with a few blunt spines on the posterior dorsal ribs mostly in young shells. Margin: Crenulate. Ligament: Parivincular, short, sitting on a prominent nymph. Hinge: Weak; RV with anterior and posterior paired laterals and two small cardinals; LV with single almost marginal laterals and two small cardinals. Pallial Musculature: Indistinct. Colour: Reddish brown and olive, ribs often darker than interspaces, some maculated overall.

Distribution & Ecology

Intertidal and shallow water in lower salinity sites. Restricted to the Baltic. Records from other localities have been shown to be juvenile Cerastoderma glauca.

Additional Information & Related Species

Key Features & Similar Species

Lives with Cerastoderma glauca and can be confused with juveniles of that species but is distinctly oblique in outline. Also close to some forms of P. exiguum but this species has fewer, stronger ribs, never more than 22.
