Species Account

Microgloma pusilla (Jeffreys, 1879)

Nuculanoidea : Nuculanidae

Tebble name: Phaseolus pusillus (Jeffreys)
Smith & Heppell name: Microgloma yongei Sanders & Allen, 1973

Notes on Nomenclature

Nuculanidae in place of Yoldiidae
Killeen & Turner (2009) use Nuculanidae instead of Yoldiidae in agreement with Ockelmann & Warén (1998) who explan that the distinguishing characters between these two families has never been well documented. Until the Yoldiidae can be clearly distinguished from the Nuculanidae we shall treat them under the single family Nuculanidae.

To size: 1-1.2 mm. Shell Structure: Minute, relatively solid. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Slightly inequilateral, beaks situated to the posterior of midline, approximately 40-45% of total length from posterior end. Tumidity: Tumid. Outline: Broadly elliptical, anteriorly extended; height of shell approximately 70% of the length; dorsal margins straight, relatively long, sloping; posterior margin narrowly rounded, anterior margin more broadly rounded; ventral margin rounded, lunule and escutcheon absent; umbo not prominent, projecting slightly above the dorsal margin, prodissoconch conspicuous.

Sculpture: Very fine, regular concentric lines, increasing in prominence towards the ventral margin. Ligament: Internal, amphidetic, oval, sat in a simple resilifer below the beaks. Hinge: Taxodont: hinge relatively strong with 4-5 anterior teeth, 5-6 posterior teeth. Pallial Musculature: Indistinct. Periostracum: Glossy, very pale straw coloured. Colour: Translucent white.
