Morphology

Size
Length 18.5-35 µm, width 6.7-7.4 µm, ratio pole width/maximum width 1:1.5-1:1.9 (populations from UK and Germany, Mann et al. 2004).

Shape
Valves narrowly elliptical with rostrate ends.

Symmetry
Isopolar, bilaterally symmetrical.

Striae
Radiate in the central part of the valve, becoming parallel or slightly convergent near the poles, 21.3-25.6 in 10 µm (populations from UK and Germany, Mann et al. 2004).

Axial area
Narrow linear, straight.

Central area
Rectangualr or slightly bow-tie-shaped subfascia, outline somewhat irregular, bordered by alternate long and short striae.

Raphe
Simple, straight, threadlike, central raphe endings expanded externally, deflected towards primary side, internally also deflected towards primary side, terminal fissures curve smoothly towards secondary side.

Other features
Polar bars appear perpendicular to the apical axis or a little reflexed; the absence of ghost striae and shape of central area separate
S. pupula from S. auldreekie and S. lanceolata.
