Morphology

Size
Length 24-30 µm, width 7.1 -8.1 µm, ratio of pole width to maximum width ca. 1:1.7 (UK populations, Mann et al. 2004).

Shape
Valves narrowly elliptical with rostrate ends.

Striae
Radiate over most of the valve but convergent at poles, with abrupt change usually marked by geniculate striae and shorter striae originating near the raphe, 18-22 in 10 µm (UK populations, Mann et al. 2004).

Axial area
Narrow linear, straight.

Central area
Elliptical or transversely oblong but irregular because of the presence of approximately alternate long and short striae; presence of 'ghost striae' (inward extensions of the normal striae that lack poroids: they are thinner strips of silica, appearing as grooves internally and sometimes externally, SEM).

Raphe
Simple filiform, straight; external proximal raphe endings expanded and scarcely deflected towards
the primary side, terminal fissures curve smoothly towards the secondary side.

Other features
Polar bars appear angled towards the central area.
