Morphology

Size
44-111 µm long, 2.5-3.8 µm wide (UK population).

Shape
Valves arcuate, gradually tapering to narrow, slightly protracted ends, in large valves the ends can appear very slightly inflated.

Symmetry
Dorsiventral, isopolar.

Striae
Striae parallel, slightly radiate near the valve ends (16-19 in 10 µm, denser towards the ends).

Raphe
Short raphe near the valve ends; terminal fissures bent on the valve face towards the valve centre and visible in LM, proximal raphe ends located on the mantle.


SEM morphology
A rimoportula present at one end of the valve.

Ecology

Widely distributed in Europe and associated with oligotraphentic, acidophilous or acidobiontic taxa.
