Remarks

Tryon (1883) lists the type locality of the species marchionatus as Marquesas Islands but does not indicate where Melvill’s variety eudoxus is from. He comments on the variety: “Mr Melville, of Prestwich, near Manchester, England, who posses a remarkable collection of Cones, has sent me a coloured drawing of a gigantic specimen in his collection, 2025 inches in length; he proposes to call it var. eudoxus.”
