Remarks

This shell was first known in the Earle of Tankerville collection, which was dispersed in 1825. Swainson’s description was published in the Tankerville sales catalogue compiled by Sowerby 1st. It then passed through the hands of Thomas Norris, Prevost and J. C. Melvill. This name was however preoccupied by M. (Turricula) rugosa Gmelin, 1791 and with this knowledge Melvill renamed Swainson’s species Mitra tankervillei in 1888. This shell at NMW is the holotype of both names with Swainson’s description being based on a single specimen.

Melvill (1888d) also notes confusion occurring with the name
rugosa after Reeve (1844a) rewrote the description and figured the specimen but gave authorship to Sowerby instead of Swainson. This erroneous authorship has been used in other lists.
