Remarks

Named after M. Albert Gaudry, professor at the Paris Museum.

Before Gassies described this specimen as
B. gaudryanus in 1879 he had figured it under the name Bulimus annibal Souverbie in the second part of his New Caledonian series (Gassies, 1871, pl. 6, fig. 3). In this text he illustrated three specimens of B. annibal and referred to an oviform variety but he does not link that variety directly to fig. 3. However, in his 1879 publication he lists the oviform variety as a synonym of B. gaudryanus and refers to fig. 3 for this new species, therefore making this figured specimen the holotype. He goes on to re-illustrate the specimen under the new name of gaudryanus in the third part of his New Caledonian series (Gassies, 1880, pl. 1, fig. 24). The NMW specimen is clearly that illustrated in both 1871, pl.6, fig. 3 and 1880, pl. 1, fig. 24 and is therefore the holotype.

The date for this name is debatable: Winckworth (1936) in his dates of publication for the
Journal de Conchyliology places this paper as being received on 16/1/1879 but comments that Zoological Record states it was published in 1878.
