Remarks
Although in his original description Gassies (1871) was not clear how many specimens were used it becomes apparent that it was a single specimen in his later observations in 1879 and 1880, received by M. Guestior from an unknown provenance in New Caledonia. The provenance later became known and he published it as Lifou, Loyalty Islands in 1879 and 1880. In these latter publications he also lists specimens as being in the collections of Gassies, Guestier, Mus. de Bordeaux, collected by R. P. Lambert.
In 1880 Gassies finally figures this species and the specimen used is almost certainly that held at NMW. The outline and size are almost identical, as are certain characters of the shell, the only difference is that the NMW specimen is much more worn than the illustration shows, but a certain level of damage is expressed in the description. This specimen is also larger than the dimensions given by Gassies - 68mm x 37mm; NMW spec. 73mm x 47mm. No original labels remain with this NMW lot, only those of Tom Pain who states they are from Lifou, collected by Lambert and are ex. Gassies; sold to him via Sowerby & Fulton. It is certainly possible that this is the holotype Gassies based his original description on and so I tentatively list it as this above. I am not aware of any other type material for this species in other collections.
