To size: To 45mm. Shell Structure: Brittle. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Inequilateral, beaks just in front of midline. Outline: Oblong, elongate; anterior more expanded than posterior, dorsal margins sloping gently, anterior broadly rounded, posterior margin narrower, ventral often sinuate. Contour: Gaping anteriorly and posteriorly.

Sculpture: Of oblique riblets running diagonally across the median area then changing angle over the posterior and running posterior ventrally to the margin, the angle of change is sharp and the ribs become crowded and wavy. Number of ribs and persistence variable. Margin: Smooth. Ligament: Parivincular, external, a prominent arched band on a nymph. Hinge: Of 2 cardinal teeth in each valve, all fragile and the posterior in RV often lost. Pallial Musculature: Pallial sinus deep, extending to beyond the line of the beaks, dorsal arm curved not angulate, ventral confluent with pallial line for most of its length. Periostracum: Periostracum thin, brownish in colour, persistent around margins. Colour: Dirty creamy white.

Distribution & Ecology

A deep and active burrower, probably found in muddy shell gravels. Mostly found in the south west of Britain and Ireland increasingly sporadic north to Shetland. Uncertain distribution in the North Sea.

Key Features & Similar Species

Can be separated from S. candidus by the more median position of the beaks, the narrower outline, sloping dorsal margins and the sharp angulation and crowded posterior riblets.
