Species Account

Microgloma guilonardi (Hoeksema, 1993)

Nuculanoidea : Nuculanidae

Tebble name: n/a
Smith & Heppell name: n/a

Notes on Nomenclature

Nuculanidae in place of Yoldiidae
Killeen & Turner (2009) use Nuculanidae instead of Yoldiidae in agreement with Ockelmann & Warén (1998) who explan that the distinguishing characters between these two families has never been well documented. Until the Yoldiidae can be clearly distinguished from the Nuculanidae we shall treat them under the single family Nuculanidae.

To size: 0.75 mm. Shell Structure: Extremely fragile, translucent. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Beaks very slightly towards the anterior. Tumidity: Tumid. Outline: Elliptical, anterior marginally narrower than posterior; dorsal margins weakly curved; lateral margins evenly rounded; ventral margin gently curved. Contour: Umbos low, beaks scarcely projecting.

Sculpture: Large prodissoconch smooth then with weak concentric lines. Margin: Inner margin smooth. Ligament: Very narrow beneath the beaks. Hinge: Taxodont; 2 weak teeth on either side of a wide edentulous space beneath the beaks; teeth subparallel with dorsal margin. Pallial Musculature: Indistinct. Periostracum: Obscure. Colour: Non translucent areas white.

Distribution & Ecology

A rare species, probably because of its minute size, recorded from the southern North Sea, Normandy, Brittany and the Mediterranean. British localities are Northumberland and Dorset.
