Morphology

Size
Length 20–55 µm, width 6.8–9.0 µm (UK and Australian populations, Mann et al. 2009)

Shape
Valves linear-elliptical with slightly rostrate poles except in the smallest valves.

Striae
Striae straight, apparently irregularly punctate, radiate, in smaller valves slightly radiate, near the poles parallel or slightly radiate, sometimes slightly curved, 18.5–21.5 in 10 µm.

Axial area
Narrow linear, straight.

Central area
Central area transversely rectangular to slightly bow-tie-shaped, 60–80% of valve width, bordered by irregular very short striae.

Raphe
Raphe slightly undulate, proximal raphe endings slightly bent towards the primary side both internally and externally, with more or less curved terminal fissures.

Other features
Polar bars parallel, sometimes slightly angled towards the pole.
