To size: Very small to 4mm. Shell Structure: Robust, opaque. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Inequilateral beaks close to the anterior margin. Tumidity: Tumid. Outline: Outline modioliform (rhomboidal – subquadrate); umbos prominent; ventral margin long straight, posterior margin long straight or indented, posterior dorsal (ligament) margin straight about half length of ventral margin. Contour: Dorsal area set off by a low rounded posterior angle
Prodissoconch very large, sculpture distinct from adult shell and forming an apparent smooth area over the umbo; prodissoconch I about 345μm in diameter, weakly dimpled; prodissoconch II about 665μm in diameter with regular concentric bands.

Sculpture: Radial sculpture of up to 50 riblets these the strongest along the median slope and much weaker on the ventral area; concentric sculpture of up to 10 thin lamellar ridges, these fluted at intersections with radial riblets. Margin: Inner margin evenly crenulated. Ligament: Ligament interior situated behind the beaks and extending for half the length of the posterior dorsal margin. Hinge: Hinge plate with an irregularly crenulated swollen area beneath the beaks; ligament margin with up to 15 dysodont teeth. Pallial Musculature: Adductor scars of about equal size. Periostracum: Indistinct. Colour: White.

Distribution & Ecology

A southern species extending into the Channel Islands, SW English Channel and around Cornwall and the Scilly Is.
Predominantly sublittoral to moderate shelf depths. Attached by a byssus, probably nestling on hard or coarse substrates with epifauna.
