Species Account

Tapes (Venerupis) corrugata (Gmelin, 1791)

Veneroidea : Veneridae

Tebble name: Venerupis pullastra (Montagu)
Smith & Heppell name: Venerupis senegalensis (Gmelin, 1791)

Notes on Nomenclature

Ruditapes, Polititapes and Venerupis are used as subgenera rather than genera. Although WoRMS and CLEMAM elevate these to generic standing, the phylogenetic tree presented by Kappner and Bieler (2006) gives very little support to the recognition of these genera.

Outline: Rhomboidal to sub-ovate, dorsal margin long, angular. Contour: Lunule not clearly defined but is heart-shaped and elongated, extends further in RV than the LV. Escutcheon not clearly defined, set in depression and extends further into LV than RV.

Sculpture: Sculpture consisting of thin concentric ridges and grooves and radial ribs, which are more defined on posterior margin giving a rough appearance. Margin: Margin smooth. Ligament: Ligament extending from umbo ¾ of way to posterior. Hinge: 3 cardinals in each valve, LV centre bifid, RV centre and posterior bifid. No laterals.
