To size: To 16mm. Shell Structure: Solid. Equivalve: Equivalve. Equilateral: Almost equilateral. Beaks just in front of midline. Tumidity: Fairly tumid. Outline: Sub-triangular. Lunule prominent, elongate, with radiating grooves. Escutcheon ill-defined.

Sculpture: Concentric ridges and grooves. Margin: Smooth. Ligament: Sunken, extends halfway to posterior margin. Hinge: 3 cardinals in each valve. 2 anterior laterals in RV and 1 anterior lateral in LV. Pallial Musculature: Pallial sinus minute, tiny indentation. Periostracum: Thin, satin. Colour: White/brown/red/purple with pattern of streaks/spots/lines/rays/blotches.

Distribution & Ecology

Widely distributed on most coasts but absent from much of the North Sea and eastern English Channel. Lives in the low intertidal and shallow shelf. Shallow-burrower in sandy mud and fine and medium gravel.
