To size: To 140mm. Shell Structure: Solid. Equivalve: Valves equally convex. Equilateral: Inequilateral. Outline: Subcircular to suboval, (umbonal angle 82-90°) anterior ears much longer than posterior. Contour: Ear in RV with a deep byssal notch. Ctenolium well developed.
Sculpture: Of numerous radial ribs and riblets of varying expression reaching 140 in number in large specimens; all ribs and riblets variously scaled. Shagreen microsculpture present at least on early stages. Ears with radial riblets. Colour: Variable, orange-red, pink, yellow, purple to brown or white, some patterned.
Distribution & Ecology
Byssally attached to stones and rocks from low in the intertidal to shelf edge. Present here only as post glacial subfossil shells. Living in Faroes, Iceland and Norway south to Bergen
