To size: To 40mm. Shell Structure: Solid. Equivalve: Inequivalve, RV slightly more convex than LV. Equilateral: Inequilateral. Outline: Adults cemented irregular, before cementation oval, rather narrow dorsally (umbonal angle 82-90°). Anterior ears larger and longer than posterior. Contour: Ear in RV with a deep byssal notch. Ctenolium well developed.
Sculpture: Before cementation (to 10-20mm) with numerous narrow riblets increasing in number with growth to about 50. Ribs uneven in size, secondaries slightly narrower giving appearance of alternating large and small. All riblets with fluted spines. After cementation rib number may increase to about 70 but may be irregular. Ears with radial riblets often with large scales. Colour: Variable, white through yellow to reddish brown and patterned with dots, blotches or zigzag lines.
