Notes on Nomenclature

Here previously as Chlamys nivea.

To size: To 50mm. Shell Structure: Solid. Equivalve: Valves equallly convex. Equilateral: Inequilateral. Outline: Oval, anterior ears two to three times longer than posterior ears. Contour: Ear in RV with a deep byssal notch. Ctenolium well developed.

Sculpture: Of 43-47 narrow, radial ribs all with fine flattened spines. Co-marginal sculpture of lines and growth stops. Ears with radial, scaly riblets, RV ear with co-marginal folds at junction with disc. Colour: Almost always white.

Distribution & Ecology

Habitat and ecology as C. varia. Has a restricted range confined to the west of Scotland and Ireland
