To size: To 25mm. Shell Structure: Thin. Equivalve: Valves equally convex. Equilateral: Inequilateral. Outline: Subcircular to suboval, a little higher than long (umbonal angle ca. 95°). Anterior ears ca. 3x longer than posterior, posterior ears distinct. Contour: RV anterior ear with a deep byssal notch. Ctenolium well developed.

Sculpture: Slightly discrepant. LV with granular antimarginal microsculpture and up to 70 radial riblets carrying fine spines. RV with more delicate micro-sculpture and a few radial riblets on the lateral margins. Ears with prominent riblets. Margin: Inner margin smooth. Colour: Colour variable, white, yellowish through shades of reddish brown, patterned irregularly with blotches, zigzags and radial streaks.

Distribution & Ecology

On a variety of coarse sediments mostly from 30m to the shelf edge and upper slope.

Additional Information & Related Species

Key Features & Similar Species

From P. tigerinum the more circular outline, proportionately larger posterior ears and the scaly riblets are distinctive. From P. furtivum, that species has no radial riblets or scales on the LV and the microsculpture is developed equally on both valves.
